Whether you need to illuminate a football pitch, tennis court, or hockey field, LED Sports Lighting from Verlichtinggroothandel ensures perfect illumination on every sports field.
Whether you want to illuminate a football pitch, tennis court, basketball court or multi-purpose sports ground: good sports field lighting makes all the difference. Both for player comfort and safety on the premises. With modern LED sports field lighting, you can illuminate sports grounds efficiently, uniformly and energy-efficiently, even during evening competitions or training in the dark.
In this range, you will find professional LED floodlights and mast floodlights suitable for outdoor sports applications. The luminaires are designed for long-term outdoor use, with high IP ratings and robust housings that can withstand weather influences.
The right choice depends on the type of sports ground, the desired illumination level, and how the luminaires are mounted. Below, we explain the most important choices.
For large outdoor areas such as football pitches, athletics tracks, and hockey fields, LED mast lighting is the most common solution. The luminaires are mounted high on masts, distributing the light broadly and uniformly across the entire playing surface. The height of the mast and the power of the luminaires together determine the lighting quality.
It is often seen that for football pitch lighting, luminaires of 100W to 400W or more are chosen, depending on the field size and the desired lighting level. Different standards apply to recreational use than to matches at club or competition level.
For smaller sports fields, such as tennis courts, padel courts, or schoolyards, more compact luminaires for LED sports field lighting at lower mounting positions are often sufficient. The required illumination level here is generally lower, but uniformity remains important to avoid shadows and dark spots.
LED floodlights are suitable when you want to illuminate a specific part of a terrain, such as a ball cage, an entrance, or an outdoor training area. They can also be used as supplementary lighting in addition to mast lighting. The beam or spread angle directs the light precisely where it is needed.
Not every luminaire is suitable for every sports location. These factors help you make the right choice.

Selection criterion |
Explanation |
|
Illumination level (lux) |
Recreational sports require less lux than official matches. Consult the standard for your sport type. |
|
IP rating |
For outdoor use, a minimum of IP65 is recommended. IP66 or higher offers extra protection against powerful water jets. |
|
Wattage |
Higher wattages are needed for larger fields or higher mounting positions. Choose based on light output (lumens), not just power. |
|
Light colour (colour temperature) |
For sports fields, 5000K to 6500K (daylight to cool white) is usually chosen. This ensures good contrast and high visibility. |
|
Beam angle |
A narrow beam illuminates directionally; a wide beam ensures uniform coverage. Choose the beam based on mounting distance and surface area. |
|
Mounting option |
Check whether the luminaire is suitable for mast or bracket mounting and whether the structure has the correct connection. |
|
Flicker (flicker index) |
For video recordings at sports events, a low flicker index (flicker-free) is important to guarantee image quality. |
Each type of sport has different lighting requirements. Below is an overview of common applications.
For football pitches, it is important that the entire field is uniformly lit, including the goal areas and corners. Club competitions often have minimum lux levels mandated by the football association. For recreational training, lower levels are usually sufficient. Mast lighting on four or more mast positions around the field provides the best uniformity.
For tennis court lighting, in addition to the light level, it is also about preventing glare. The luminaires are aimed and positioned so that players do not look directly into the light source. Covered courts have different requirements than outdoor courts.
Multi-purpose terrains that also serve as playgrounds during the day benefit from lighting that is flexible in control. Think of a twilight sensor or a timer that automatically switches on when there is insufficient daylight. This limits energy consumption without manual operation.
LED lighting for sports fields has several clear advantages over conventional metal halide lamps or fluorescent luminaires, which were standard in the past:

For recreational football at training level, 75 to 200 lux on the pitch is usually sufficient. For official matches at club level, the recommended standards are higher, often from 200 to 500 lux or more, depending on the competition level and the requirements of the association. Consult the relevant sports association for the exact standard for your situation.
For outdoor use, an IP rating of at least IP65 is recommended. This guarantees protection against dust and spray water from all directions. In locations with heavy rainfall or high-pressure cleaning, IP66 or higher is a better choice. Always check the luminaire's specifications for definitive outdoor use.
In many cases, it is possible to reuse existing masts when switching to LED. However, check whether the bracket or mounting connection of the new luminaire matches the existing structure, and whether the electrical connection and power of the existing installation are suitable for the new luminaires. If in doubt, it is advisable to consult an installer.
LED mast lighting is specifically designed for mounting on high masts and has a greater light output, more robust housing, and beam angles suitable for illuminating large areas from a distance. A standard LED floodlight is more compact and suitable for lower mounting positions or smaller areas. For large sports fields, mast lighting is the right choice in most cases.
For indoor sports halls, other luminaires are suitable, such as LED high bays. These are designed for large indoor spaces with high ceilings and provide uniform illumination on the playing surface without glare. Sports field lighting such as floodlights and mast lighting is primarily intended for outdoor use.
