Recessed or surface-mounted: which downlighter suits your ceiling?

The first choice you make is between recessed and surface-mounted. A recessed downlighter largely disappears into the ceiling, providing a sleek, inconspicuous result, but it requires sufficient installation depth above the ceiling. If you cannot mill or if there is insufficient space above the ceiling, a surface-mounted downlighter is a practical solution: you mount it directly against the ceiling, without having to cut holes.

What size downlighter do you need?

Choosing colour temperature

Besides the size, the colour temperature determines how a space feels. The table below provides a practical guideline:

Dimmable

Do you want to adjust the light intensity to the situation? Then choose a dimmable LED downlighter, possibly with DALI control for larger projects where multiple fixtures are centrally controlled.

Fixture colour: black or white

The finish of the fixture also determines the look in the room. If you are looking for a downlighter that stands out in a dark or industrial interior, check out our black LED downlights. If a neutral, inconspicuous finish suits your ceiling better, then white LED downlights are the logical choice.

IP rating: also suitable for bathrooms or damp rooms

If you are placing the downlighter in a bathroom or other damp room, pay attention to the IP rating. Choose at least IP44 for a splash-proof version. For dry rooms such as an office or living room, a lower IP rating is sufficient.
